Backflow Prevention Reference Manual

Backflow Prevention Reference Manual

In collaboration with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA), the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) is pleased to announce the second edition of IAPMO's Backflow Prevention Reference Manual.

This manual represents the merging and revision of two of the industry’s most relied upon training manuals, the first edition of IAPMO's Backflow Prevention Reference Manual and the UA's Cross-Connection Control Manual.

“The second edition of the manual is the result of the collaboration of IAPMO and the United Association to create the most comprehensive backflow prevention training manual available,” said Gary Hamilton, director of Plumbing Services for the UA. “This manual will serve our industry as a valuable resource and training tool for the protection of potable water systems.”

This full color, illustrated reference manual is designed to teach every aspect of backflow prevention and cross-connection control, from identifying and testing the wide variety of backflow prevention assemblies to proper selection and installation of both testable assemblies and non-testable backflow prevention devices. The tester will be able to recognize (and properly document) the symptoms of backflow prevention assembly and device failure, and provide the knowledge needed to repair and ensure that the backflow preventer is performing within industry standards. This manual provides instruction on how to recognize degrees of hazard or potential risks to potable water systems, and whether the proper backflow prevention method, device or assembly has been correctly installed.

"IAPMO and the UA brought together the best minds in the industry to develop and improve the second edition of the Backflow Prevention Reference Manual," said Dan Daniels, IAPMO president. "The resulting publication contains the technical resources and expertise needed by those responsible for protecting our water supply from cross-connections and contamination."

The manual covers the history of backflow prevention; definitions and devices; backflow prevention hydraulics; testing methods with full, detailed illustrations; an overview of gauges and test kits; trouble shooting guide; cross-connection control surveys; program development; code requirements and installation standards. The manual is used as the textbook for many training classes and also contains sample test questions to help prepare an individual to become a certified backflow prevention tester, surveyor or repairer.

Director of the IAPMO Backflow Prevention Institute Training and Education Sean Cleary points out: “This manual contains the information needed by not only certified testers, but also by plumbing inspectors, design professionals, building officials and engineers to ensure that the proper protection is specified, installed, tested and maintained. I encourage everyone in the industry to use this important tool.

“With it, you can become a competent and vital part of the field of plumbers, pipefitters, water suppliers and engineers dedicated to ‘protecting the health of the nation.’ ”

The unique, 300-page Backflow Prevention Reference Manual contains illustrations in real-world field settings and can be used by regulatory agencies as a guide to determine what type of valve can be used in a particular case. With information on the history of backflow prevention as well as chapters written from the regulatory perspective, Backflow Prevention Reference Manual is an important resource for system designers, urban planners, and utility companies-professionals "on both sides of the water meter".
